Our independent evaluation process for cigarette filters and smoking accessories
Every product featured on Cigarette Filters Hub goes through a structured, hands-on evaluation before we publish a recommendation. We do not copy manufacturer claims or rely on customer reviews alone. Below you will find a complete, transparent account of how we select, test, score, and publish reviews.
Our methodology has been refined since 2021 by Senior Editor Marcus Webb and is applied consistently across all product categories — from standard 8mm cigarette filters to slim filters, rolling papers, and accessories.
We identify products through Amazon search data, reader requests, and market monitoring. All test units are purchased through Amazon at retail price — we do not accept free samples from manufacturers. This ensures our reviews reflect the same purchase experience as any shopper.
Each filter is tested across multiple cigarette brands and tobacco types. We evaluate draw resistance, fit consistency, durability across multiple uses, and visible filtration (discolouration of the filter). Testing spans at least 3 – 5 days of regular use to capture real-world performance rather than first-impression bias.
We score products across six weighted criteria (see below). Each criterion is assessed independently and scored 1 – 10. The final score is a weighted average. Scores are not adjusted based on price point or affiliate commission rates.
We compare each product against similar items in its category. Best-of lists and category pages rank products by score, not by commission rate. Where two products score similarly, we consider value-for-money as a tiebreaker. We note discontinued or out-of-stock products and update listings quarterly.
Reviews are published with a "Last Tested" date. Pages are revisited when: (a) Amazon price or availability changes significantly, (b) reader comments flag new issues, or (c) the manufacturer releases a new version. We mark updated content clearly with a revision date.
All cigarette filter reviews use these six weighted criteria, totalling 100%.
How clearly the filter captures and displays tar residue. A filter that shows visible discolouration provides confidence that filtration is occurring.
Whether the filter meaningfully increases draw resistance versus smoking without a filter. Significant restriction is penalised. Smooth, natural draw is ideal.
Consistency of fit across different cigarette brands. Does the filter stay in place? Is there any leakage around the seal? Tested with 5+ cigarette brands per size.
How many cigarettes the filter remains effective for before performance visibly degrades. We compare our actual usage count against the manufacturer’s stated figure.
Cost per filter and cost per cigarette smoked, based on Amazon listing price at time of review. We factor in pack size to calculate the true unit cost.
BPA-free certification, food-grade polymer use, packaging quality and protection during shipping. We check for manufacturer safety declarations.
